Designing Programming Languages for Creativity w/Yann Orlarey

Card image

Creative programming, as typically done by digital artists and musicians, is a particular form of programming used as a means of discovery and invention. It, therefore, goes beyond the traditional framework of an engineering approach that aims to implement, as best as possible, an idea that often pre-exists and is reasonably well specified.
Creative programming is more of a form of hyper-prototyping where you try a lot of things to see what happens. The "cogitare" and the "intellegere" are essential elements of this approach so that the art object co-emerges at the same time as the program that implements it. The programming language thus goes beyond its traditional role as an implementation tool, to become a tool for invention and pure creation.

01101110 is light-music installation echoing and celebrating the simplest mathematical model of computation. A series of light/shadow paintings depict instances of the evolution of the Rule 110 one-dimensional cellular automaton (Rule 01101110 in binary) accompanied by a music layer based on the same process. The paintings are created by digitally fabricated perforated panels and white light LED beams; the panels diffract the light and project it on blanc canvases hanged on the wall of the exhibition space. Each painting offers it’s one unique light and sonic space.

Digital Musical Instruments in the Digital Fabrication Age

Card image

This presentation is related to digital musical instrument design and composition in the era personal digital fabrication. Currently, the third industrial revolution and the maker culture is changing the model of production and distribution towards a customised, personal, local fabrication. Creative coding, interaction design and digital fabrication offer an open access medium for the new generation of composers, to develop their creative ideas and produce sonic artworks that manifest them self both physically and digitally. Turning data into sound and turning data into things (that make sound) is the topic of this presentation.

Black Queen

Card image

The Black Queen is a theatrical experience employing the tools of technology, classical music, folk melodies, contemporary poetry, and historical exploration to tell the story of Barbora of Celje, Queen of the Holy Roman Empire in the early 1400’s. She was a shrewd businesswoman and a compassionate guardian of justice. In partnership with a trusting and loving husband, King Sigismund of Luxembourg, she became the most powerful queen of her time. As Sigismund was dying, a rumor campaign was created to destroy her reputation and rob her of her powers. Even the pope helped in spreading stories of her as a heretic, a whore, and a witch. When her husband died, she was arrested and exiled. After her death she lived on only as an evil myth, The Black Queen. This project is designed to resurrect her as the badass she truly was.
